Gabriela Garcia, Founder-Executive Director

I was born and raised in Mendoza, Argentina, where I earned my degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education in 1989 from the National University of Cuyo.

While completing courses toward my degree, I worked at a preschool, Tamborile, for four years. During that time I worked with children who were between ages 2 and 5. Those were very significant years in my career and I am very glad to continue a relationship with the school, which I visit every time I’m in Argentina.

At age 25, I moved to New York City and opened my own business, an art gallery and framing business called Arts de Paris. After living in New York for three years, I decided to move to Atlanta with my business and look for new adventures. I met my husband, Ramiro, here and closed the gallery when my first son, Julian, was born.

My involvement in the Inman Park Cooperative Preschool began when Julian started the 1-year-old class. I fell in love with the preschool and reconnected with my passion of teaching. As a parent at Inman Park, I enjoyed every aspect of the school, especially the possibility of participating in the daily life of the school as a parent helper and later on as the Spanish teacher. I was also a member of the education committee during the four years we were at the preschool.

After teaching Spanish at Inman Park for a couple of years, I developed and implemented the Parent-Tot Spanish Program. This program, created to teach Spanish to 2- to 5-year-olds, focused on the involvement of the parents to reinforce their child’s learning. Parents participated in the 50-minute classes with their children. I really enjoyed teaching this class!

At the same time, in 1998, I started working as a Spanish consultant for Decatur City Schools, meeting weekly with the Spanish teachers to develop the Spanish curriculum for kindergarten through second grade, sharing ideas, and authentic songs and games that children play in Latin America.

In January 2000, while still involved with the Inman Park Preschool, the idea of starting a preschool here in Grant Park began. From a small meeting with 15 people at my house, the idea grew to become a preschool with four classes to begin in September of that year.

The preschool has definitely transformed my life as well as the life of my family. My husband, Ramiro supported this effort by becoming Mr. Mom while I worked more than full-time to get the school up and running. While there have been many challenges, I can say that this has been a most wonderful experience so far! I truly enjoy every piece of my job and I love being part of this community of learners.

I live in Grant Park with my husband, Ramiro and my sons, Julian - 19 years old - and Santiago - 17 years old. Julian and Santiago attended the Neighborhood Charter School and Atlanta Charter Middle School.  Santiago and Julian are currently attending Decatur High School.  Ramiro keeps busy as a Realtor with Prudential Realty.

We all enjoy being part of this wonderful neighborhood!
